KATE LYNDON – MEMBER OF THE MONTH – OCTOBER 2021

SBG welcomes our newest member Kate Lyndon.

Kate grew up on the outskirts of Brisbane with a menagerie of animals and her greatest love was for horses and dogs.

She was a mad keen equestrian and dressage dominated a large part of her childhood.

The most influential person in her early years was her Grandfather.  He was a successful businessman, founder of a law firm and chairman of a large ASX listed pastoral company.

It was his humility and kindness that inspired her the most.

“He very much instilled the value of equality and the importance of treating people with fairness.”

Her mother was also raised with these values and whilst she never pursued a career, she was always very hard working and engaged equally with everyone around her.

One of her mother’s favourite sayings was “you get out of it what you put in” and this quote has always stuck with her because she believes it’s relevant to all that we do, whether it be relationships or work.

Kate recently joined Ramsay as Deputy Group Treasurer.

Throughout her childhood all she wanted to be was a vet but towards the end of her year 12, her vet suggested that she administer an injection to her horse and she realised then that she didn’t have the stomach for it.

Kate ended up completing a science degree, majoring in ruminate nutrition which was the start of a short lived career in agriculture.

At the age of 30, she enrolled in a double masters of finance/economics and international business at Macquarie University which involved a semester in La Havre France.

Once completing her studies, Kate drove herself to Sydney with all that she could fit in her car. She was 36 years of age with great optimism and started working part time at Eli Lilly pharmaceutical.

Nobody prepared her for how hard it would be to start as a graduate and she was ready to embark on a career in finance.

After 6 months of looking and getting to know most of the recruiters in Sydney, she worked as an analyst for a boutique investment bank called InterFinancial.

It was a terrific introduction to a diverse range of financial skills ranging from equities to M&A and preparing small corporates for ASX listings.

In 2008, she joined Qantas, firstly in the department of Corporate Finance and later in Group Treasury.

Throughout her 13 years at Qantas she developed corporate and treasury skills (mostly funding) which led her to Ramsay Health Care where she works today.

“I’m passionate about what I do at work and delivering the best outcome.  I thrive on a good challenge and working with diverse and inspiring people.”

Her five key keys to success are:-

• Accept setbacks and to not give up

• Hard work and determination

• Building networks as you can’t do it all

   on your own

• Treat others with respect and kindness

• Work life balance

Kate is also a mother and is inspired daily by her nine year old daughter. “I love being a mother because I get to watch my daughter grow and learn to be the best version of herself.”

In her spare time, she loves going for walks with her daughter and reading novels. She used to love travelling, going to the theatre and ocean swimming and hopes to get back to that soon.

Her dreams and aspirations is to be a Group Treasurer one day, but for now is enjoying the challenges presented every day in her current role at Ramsay.

“It’s very rewarding to be in a support role for a company that is offering front line health services to people during this pandemic.”
