JO CARTER – FLIGHT ATTENDANT
What a privilege it is to be a SBG member of the month amongst all of these gorgeous and accomplished women. I am 50 this year and I can easily say I am having the best time of my life.
I was raised in Baulkham Hills, North West of Sydney and my Father was my biggest mentor growing up. He always had a happy disposition and was so much fun to be with. He was an amazing storyteller and had a real passion for life and lived it with joy.
For the last 20 years, I’ve worked for Qantas as a Flight Attendant. My role for the past four years has been as an Aviation Safety Training Instructor. My career choice was not so much about the travel (although I have been to some pretty amazing places) but more about flying which is why I now teach all things aviation. My Qantas colleagues are like my second family and I really did miss them during the Covid lockdown.
This pandemic has really opened my eyes and given me time to reflect on my life and achievements and future opportunities. I would love to continue as a trainer / teacher. It’s a real skill to be able to deliver the content and keep the audience engaged. It’s very rewarding!
In the last year, I reinvented myself by discovering a newfound passion for fitness and health. I now run 7kms almost every day and I am training for a half marathon in May of this year. In May of 2020, I couldn’t even run more than a few metres. I was so unfit and overweight, so I did something about it and lost 25kgs on a high protein diet combined with exercise.
I started physical culture classes and love it because it’s great for flexibility and deportment. My partner bought me roller skates for Christmas and now roller-skating is a new fun hobby too.
I think I am capable of doing anything I put my mind to. My other passions are true crime podcasts and documentaries, always music, (I cannot live without music), movies and of course my beautiful daughter.
In the past, I struggled with depression and anxiety but found the strength to be honest and open about it. Being kind to myself has allowed me to move forward in life. I’m a bit of an all or nothing kind of girl so when I set a challenge for myself, I always follow through.
I ensure I keep good people in my life close and filter out anyone who is toxic. Adequate sleep is everything because when life gets tough, I always prioritise sleep over everything because the new day is always brighter. I also make sure I have fun on a regular basis. This can be with my amazing and crazy, fun family (I have 7 siblings) or with my beautiful girlfriends.
In the next 5 years, I don’t think I’ll be living in Sydney. I am ready for a sea change. This will depend on where my daughter chooses to live and study. I have also just started studying for a real estate licence so will see where this takes me. Watch this space!
